Girls dominate home court

A 40-point win over Perkins County, Nebraska, Tuesday, Jan. 28, and a 21-point victory over Yuma Friday, Jan. 31, extended the Holyoke Lady Dragon varsity basketball team’s season record to 13-1 heading into the final three weeks of regular play.

“We control our own destiny right now,” said coach John Baumgartner.

Holyoke has won all four of its conference games, including Yuma on Friday night. And for Baumgartner, it was a good feeling to beat Yuma — the reigning state champs and a program that has been dominating girls basketball in recent years.

There are four more conference matchups before districts start the last week of February.

Holyoke 58, Perkins County 18

The Lady Dragons kicked off their home game Tuesday with three strong quarters against Perkins County, including 12 points in the first, 20 in the second and 18 in the third.

“The girls didn’t take them lightly,” said Baumgartner. “Shots were going up and going in.”

Dragon defense was working just as hard as the offense, keeping Perkins County to single-digit points in all four quarters. “Defensively we shut them down,” said Baumgartner.

Holyoke finished the game with a 58-18 win.

Lead scorers were Kristin Vieselmeyer with 14 points (five 2-pointers and 4-6 from the line) and Lauren Herman with 10 points (five two-pointers). Sarah Razo also sunk three out of Holyoke’s five 3-pointers for nine points.

Holyoke made nine out of 12 free throws for 75% accuracy.

Vieselmeyer had the most rebounds with 11, and Herman and Janessa Lutze each blocked a shot.

Emily Jelden grabbed four steals, and she and Herman had five assists apiece.
