Girls ride wave of 6 straight wins to regionals
Holyoke volleyball is headed to regionals Saturday, May 1, after ending the regular season with a 10-4 record.
No. 9 Holyoke will travel to Vail to play against No. 8 Vail Mountain and No. 17 Telluride. Holyoke will play Telluride at about 12:30 p.m. and Vail Mountain at about 2 p.m. The eight regions will each consist of a tri, and the team that wins the tri will move on to the state tournament.
Holyoke won all four matches last week, which amounts to six consecutive wins when their April 16 victories over Haxtun and Wray are taken into account.
The Lady Dragons defeated both Idalia and Prairie in straight sets on the home court Tuesday, April 20. They then traveled to Haxtun on Friday, April 23, for a tri with Weldon Valley and Haxtun. They beat Weldon Valley in straight sets and defeated Haxtun in four.
Coach Michelle Vieselmeyer said she is excited about the aggressive play the girls continue to show on the court.
“I’m happy with how they played and their effort,” she said, adding that she’s glad to see they’re keeping service errors at a minimum.
Holyoke 3, Idalia 0
Holyoke swept Idalia 25-17, 25-20, 25-7. The Lady Dragons played aggressively with 31 kills, and their serves were accurate with 12 aces and only four service errors.
Vieselmeyer pointed out that she would like to see fewer dig errors moving forward, as Holyoke had 17 in the match.
Kristin Vieselmeyer led attacks with 24, including 13 kills. She also had six blocks. Elise Krogmeier had 18 attacks and five blocks, and Correy Koellner had 17 attacks.
Krogmeier had the most serves for the Lady Dragons with 17, including three aces. Kristin Vieselmeyer had five aces on 14 serves.
Elyce Talavera set the ball 85 times, assisting 26 kills.
Tamara Penzing received 15 serves and had 23 digs.
Holyoke 3, Prairie 0
In their second match last Tuesday, the Lady Dragons defeated Prairie 25-14, 25-14, 25-13. Their aggressive and accurate play continued with 27 total kills on 77 attacks and only four service errors on 76 serves, 15 of which were aces.
Vieselmeyer said she was happy to see the overall errors kept low, and the team will continue to work to minimize them by fine-tuning their coverage defensively.
Kristin Vieselmeyer led with 25 attacks, including 14 kills. She also led the team with five blocks and 22 digs.
Elyce Talavera led in serves with 18, including six aces. She assisted 23 kills on 67 sets. Kristin Vieselmeyer had four aces on 17 serves and Penzing had three aces on 16 serves and led in serve receptions with 12. Kristin Vieselmeyer and Audrey Talavera each received nine serves.
