Girls sail past Merino, Nederland

The Lady Dragons were on fire last weekend, bringing home a hot 38-19 win in Merino Friday, Jan. 27, and dominating over Nederland 50-11 at home Saturday.
The varsity team’s defense did everything it’s used to doing this season and kept its opponents to less than 20 points. The offense also stepped up to show what it can do to complement the defense.
“We can be happy about what we’ve done but not satisfied,” said coach John Baumgartner. In reference to the tough February schedule looming ahead of them, the athletes still have work to do to get them through the regular season. It’s all in preparation for post season action, said Baumgartner.

With an emphasis on playing smarter offensively, Baumgartner said the varsity girls did better in Merino Friday night, especially in the second half.
While Holyoke scored only seven and nine points in the first and second quarters respectively, they came back after halftime for 14 points in the third and another eight in the final period.
Meanwhile, the Dragon defense did its job. Merino was scoreless in the first quarter, and with only seven in the second, the Rams trailed by nine at halftime. Merino only managed 12 in the second half, giving Holyoke the 38-19 win.
Baumgartner pointed out that in Merino’s scoring effort, the HHS defense kept them to only four field goals.
“However, we put them on the line too much,” he said, noting Merino made 10 out of 13 free throws.
Holyoke’s stats from Friday put Grace Dille at the top of the score sheet, with 15 points, including seven 2-pointers. Brook Prottsman added another 13 points for the Dragons.
Dille led both rebounds with 14 and steals with four. Emily Jelden had five assists.
