Girls track brings home 5 state medals

A little snow wasn’t going to get the Holyoke girls track team down. Despite the weather postponement that led to the 2A Colorado state track meet being put off and condensed into two days, the young team proved that the program is building in a big way.
With 12 Holyoke girls and one boy at the meet, the girls came home with five medals, earning 13th place overall.
“It’s a big step forward for the girls track program,” said coach Dusty Sprague. “I was really proud of the way they stayed focused and competed, even after it was postponed.”
The meet was scheduled for Thursday-Saturday, but a snowstorm meant the competitors would have to wait until Saturday for the first day of the meet. Additionally, there were no preliminary contests — each time, height and distance was final.
Freshman Taeryn Trumper made it clear that she will be one to watch through her high school career, earning medals in all four events she competed in at the state competition. She set the school record in her second-place long jump with a distance of 17’5”, and took home fifth-place finishes in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes. Her 100 meter time was a personal best at :12.83.
Trumper also ran on the sixth-place 4x4 relay with teammates Emily Jelden, Josie Herman and Brook Prottsman.
Freshman Jelden gave an impressive performance as well, earning another medal as she tied for fourth place with her personal best 8’7” pole vault.
