Golf season ends at home

A league tourney in Holyoke Thursday, Sept. 26, ended the Dragon boys golf season following the Sept. 24 regional action at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora.

Varsity golfers in both tourneys included Ty Dirks, Mason Vernon, Tristen Ferguson and Ethan Johnson.

Murphy Creek presented some challenges, noted coach Nick Flaa, citing the many bunkers throughout the course, penalizing native grasses, firm and fast greens, and the obvious pressure of putting together a solid round of golf to qualify for state.

In this particular tourney, golfers had to shoot a 90 to get into a playoff for state qualification. Dirks finished with 110, Ferguson 120, Vernon 122 and Johnson 132.

“This was a good test for all four Holyoke golfers, and although the scores are not very reflective of the growth we had this season, we gained some valuable mental awareness and understanding about what it takes to get to the next level,” Flaa said.
