Golfers battle weather at home invite

Last week wasn’t quite what the Holyoke girls golf team was hoping for, but the team did get a chance to hit the links against competition.

The calendar called for a Tuesday, March 29, meet at home, then a trip to Cheyenne Wells on Friday.

The weather wreaked havoc with both events, making Tuesday a tough event to complete at the Holyoke Golf Club and leading Friday’s tournament to be called off completely.

Holyoke head coach Nick Flaa said the weather was not in anyone’s favor at Holyoke as players battled 15-30 mph sustained winds with gusts up to 40.

“Not to mention the drizzle that hit us coming down the stretch. Everyone was able to finish and battle through,” he added.

Playing at home was a blessing, Flaa said, especially for the team’s new golfers who were playing in their first tournament.

“I feel it made them comfortable and really helped with their development. For our returning players, it was also an advantage playing our home course to start as we’ve been practicing on these course conditions and knew how the course was going to play,” Flaa said.

Holyoke took the 18-hole varisty team title by 14 strokes over Brush, 303-317.

In a field of 26 golfers, junior Emma Thompson won the individual team title by eight stokes after shooting an 88, a career best. Erin Andersen finished eighth with a 107, and Grace Roberts was one shot behind her. Grace Gibson rounded out Holyoke varsity golfers with a 114.
