Golfers end season at regional tourney

Vernon wins playoff to earn All Conference recognition at league meet

HHS boys golf for 2020 ended in regional action at Boomerang Links in Greeley on Monday, Sept. 21, with the same Holyoke varsity foursome having competed in the Northeastern League Championship in Wray on Thursday, Sept. 17.

Competing in the final events were Ty Dirks, Mason Vernon, Ethan Johnson and Tristen Ferguson.

Coach Nick Flaa said it was a very fast, successful year but pointed out that team members need to play more golf if they want to elevate their games.

The Sept. 17 winner-take-all final league event of the season awarded the top team (Stratton) as league champion and six All Conference players with two honorable mentions.

“The story of the day was Mason Vernon,” said Flaa. “Playing one of his best rounds of the year, Mason carded an 88, bogey golf on this par 70 track.”

Tied for sixth in the tourney with Ben Schaal of Burlington, a sudden death playoff was required to determine the sixth All Conference spot.

Describing the playoff action on Hole No. 1, Flaa said that Vernon popped up his tee shot on the left side, leaving himself a good distance from the green. He found a way to get it near the green side bunker in two, then chip it to 20 feet, only to sink that putt for par.

Schaal had a putt of similar distance to extend the playoff but failed on his attempt, giving Vernon the final All Conference spot.
