Brenna Sullivan

Golfers will be fighting for varsity spots this season

Unlike most sports, high school golf teams have just four varsity players competing in each tournament. Those golfers may change from one event to the next, but last year’s Holyoke High School team had a solid core of four that routinely played on the varsity level.
HHS senior Brenna Sullivan is the only one who remains, as the other three graduated last year. This is her fourth year on the team. She’s been selected by her coaches to compete at regionals every season, and she earned honorable mention on the All-Conference list as a sophomore and a junior. As the only returning letterwinner, she will assume a new leadership role this year.
Also on the team are seniors Emily Chaney, Kaylee Camblin and Sloane Bishop; juniors Makenzie Martin, Tayler Hale, Jackie Valenzuela, Traeli Hutches and Ciera Schelling of Haxtun; and sophomores Amy Mackay and Chloie Metzger. Also returning to the team are coaches Nick Flaa and Marcia Dalton, with the help of volunteer coach Audrey Ault. Though there are no freshmen, there are a few who are first-time team members.
With the first tournament slated for Monday, March 25, in Brush, the golfers have been busy honing their skills and working toward one of those varsity positions in practice. Weather has meant limited time on the course, but that hasn’t necessarily had a negative impact. Practicing indoors, they’ve been working on making solid contact and improving their short game. “That’s where we can save the most shots,” Flaa said. That ties in well to the coaches’ plan to start with small swings and work their way up.
