Haxtun Bulldogs victorious on the baseball diamond

Getting it in just ahead of the weekend snow, Holyoke hosted Haxtun on Friday, March 24, for a doubleheader originally scheduled for March 25. Although the first game was a close one, the visiting Bulldogs won both games, posting 7-6 and 18-0 scores for the day.

“We did a lot of really good things in the first game and made some big plays,” Head Coach Jimmy French said, “but we also had a few mistakes that cost us, and they really came back to bite us in the end.”

As for the second game, he acknowledged the team needs to work on keeping their composure and bouncing back after a tough loss, so it doesn’t let another game get away from them like that.

The Dragons head into the next week of their season with a 2-2 record. Next on the schedule is a home game against the Akron Rams, who also came out of the weekend with a 2-2 record. A single varsity contest will begin Saturday, April 1, at 11 a.m., with a JV game to follow.

French noted that the team is excited to get back out there and play again. “We know we’ve got some things to work on,” French said, “but I think we can put things together.”

Holyoke 6, Haxtun 7

In Friday’s first game, Haxtun started out at bat and managed to post one run in the first inning. When the Dragons took their turn, Reid Sprague tied up the game. Neither team scored in the second inning, but the Bulldogs came out fighting in the top of the third. They racked up six runs and took a 7-1 lead. The Dragons couldn’t quite keep pace in the bottom of the inning. Tyson Mosenteen and Cash Weber each scored a run.

Haxtun’s 7-3 lead stood through the fourth inning, but Holyoke kept Haxtun from scoring in the fifth. Mosenteen scored another run, putting the score to 7-4 going into the sixth inning, which also ended up being scoreless.
