Haxtun, Wray games a slam dunk for Lady Dragons

The Lady Dragon basketball team finished 2021 with two big wins over Haxtun at home Tuesday, Dec. 14, and over Wray on the road Thursday, Dec. 16.

The Phillips County battle drew a big crowd last Tuesday, and Holyoke gave its fans just what they wanted to see. The Lady Dragons put up 18 points in the first quarter followed by 14 in the second while the defense kept Haxtun to only six points in the first half.

It was one of the best defensive efforts coach John Baumgartner has seen all season; however, he felt the girls gave away too many points in the second half.

Haxtun outscored Holyoke 15-13 in the third quarter and 20-16 in the fourth, but the Lady Dragons still came away with a strong 61-41 win.

With four Holyoke girls in double digits, Baumgartner said he was pleased with the offensive effort. The team is shooting the ball well from outside the arc while also maintaining an inside presence, he added.

One thing they’ll be working on for 2022: free throws. Their seven out of 14 on Tuesday put them at only 50% accuracy.

Kristin Vieselmeyer led the scoring effort with 23 points, including nine 2-pointers, one 3-pointer and two for two from the line. Elyce Talavera and Lauren Herman scored 11 apiece, and Elise Krogmeier had 10 points.

Elyce Talavera and Vieselmeyer made it a double-double with 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively. Both girls recorded three steals, and Vieselmeyer blocked two shots. Herman and Vieselmeyer led assists with four apiece.
