Herman, Koellner break school records at first meet of the season

The Holyoke High School track and field team took a small detour from its original schedule and competed at its first meet of the season Friday, April 1, at the Wiggins Invitational.

Coach Corey Koberstein said it was a big meet with 28 teams, and the day started out cold and windy.

“As a team, it was good to get our first track meet under our belt,” he said.

“We have a lot of fresh faces,” he added, noting that since some of the athletes have never competed on a track team before, it was a good experience for them.

Now, the season is all about improving times and distances, said Koberstein.

Two reigning state champs improved their distances and beat their own school records from the 2021 season. Lauren Herman won the discus competition with a throw of 127 feet, 5 inches. Correy Koellner claimed top honors in shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 2 inches.

Also in the girls competition, Linda Esser placed first in the long jump and fourth in the 100 meter dash, and sprinter Tayla Martin earned second and seventh in the 400 and 200 meter races, respectively.
