HHS baseball beats Caliche Buffaloes 7-4

On April 18, the Holyoke Dragon baseball team traveled to Caliche to play the Buffaloes. The Dragons won the varsity contest 7-4.

“I thought we played well all game, and had a lot of good swings and made good pitches, but had a lot of bounces not quite going our way the first half of the game,” said Coach Jimmy French. “I was really proud of how we stuck with it and did what we needed to to come away with a win.”

Holyoke got on the board with one run in the first. Defensively, the Dragons held Caliche scoreless in the bottom of the inning. Unfortunately, Holyoke was the team that didn’t score in the second inning. The Buffaloes tied it up in their second turn at bat.

In the third inning, each team scored a run, putting the score to 3-3. In both the fourth and the fifth innings, neither team scored.

“Their pitcher did a pretty good job of keeping us off balance at first,” French acknowledged. Things improved in the sixth inning, though. Holyoke returned to the plate and scored two runs. Caliche managed only one, so the home team trailed 4-3 going into the final inning.

With two runners on base, Holyoke’s Wyatt Sprague was up to bat. Earlier in the game, he had hit a ball over the fence, but it went foul. This time, the over-the-fence hit stayed fair, putting the Dragons ahead 7-4. The Buffaloes had one more chance to make a comeback, but only managed one run in the bottom of the inning, ultimately losing 7-4.
