HHS boys basketball hits the court while ‘playing quick’

With their first official practice starting Nov. 14, the Holyoke High School boys’ basketball team kickstarted the season in a manner Coach Colbey Stumpf characterized as “athletic and quick.” Prior to the first practice, the team scheduled an additional two weeks of optional open gyms.

To further ensure a great season, Stumpf said, he implemented a new “Player’s Contract.” The contract is meant to hold each player accountable and align the goals of the team. His description of what daily in-season practices look like is “a variety of shooting, defensive drills and some individual skill work. We usually finish with a scrimmage or team game.”

The current team happens to be younger than usual, though Stumpf said their athleticism counteracted the factors of age and experience. The have been “playing quick” since the first official practice, he continued, emphasizing their ability to get up and down the court. According to him, this skill will be sustainable if the team “keeps on sticking to what we know and playing our game.”
