HHS boys basketball season ends in first round of districts

Yuma, SedgCo, Haxtun and Akron advance to regionals

Holyoke High School’s boys basketball season ended at home Feb. 20 in the first round of the district tournament, with a 49-38 loss to the Haxtun Bulldogs.
The county rivals were 1-1 against each other during the regular season, promising an exciting third matchup last Tuesday, but ultimately Haxtun came out on top and went on to place third in the district tournament. Yuma took first place, Sedgwick County second and Akron fourth. The four teams will go on to play in regionals March 2-3.
Despite their loss, coach Scott Dille said, “I am super proud of the way that our kids competed on the court.” He added that Haxtun played a very good game as well.
In the first quarter, Slaten Burris got the Dragons started with a 3-pointer and a pair of foul shots. Blake Mosenteen then contributed a couple of field goals, but HHS trailed 13-9 going into the second period.
With the score so close, emotions were clearly running high. Both teams fouled liberally, allowing for 20 free-throw attempts in the second quarter alone. That worked out to Haxtun’s advantage, and the Bulldogs extended their lead to 28-22.
Mosenteen scored the Dragons’ 10 points in the third quarter, but still Haxtun crept further ahead, scoring 13 of their own. In the final period, Holyoke added another six, but Haxtun posted eight for the 49-38 win.
