HHS boys ready for Season B basketball
It took some time, but basketball season is here, and the Dragons are looking forward to a bit of normalcy after so many changes.
“We’re handling it on a day-by-day basis,” head coach Marcus Kammer said. “We’ve got the right mindset. The kids understand there’s an opportunity here, and we’ll go right at it.”
Rosters are limited to a maximum of 12 players, and all players and coaches are required to wear masks. Kammer is confident that his team can adapt to the changes COVID-19 has placed on the season.
“Basketball can bring a little normal back into the high school athlete’s life,” he said. “It’s something to strive for and compete in.” He added that although basketball may look a little different this year, it will still bring a sense of something normal to be able to play a season.
The regular season is scheduled to have 14 games. There will be no districts or regionals, and the state tournament is scheduled to begin March 9.
Kammer added that the team will have to continue to make small adjustments as a season that is usually three months in length is now six weeks. He said the team will take everything one day at a time and adapt on a daily basis.
“We’re focusing on taking the small steps rather than jumping up the ladder,” Kammer said. “With a short time to get prepared, we will have to work to get prepared mentally and physically.”
Last year the Dragons were eliminated in the first round of regionals. Kammer is confident in the team’s outlook this season.
“We are returning a lot of letterwinners,” Kammer said, adding that the team lost two seniors from last year. “The experience of our varsity kids should allow us to get off to a quick start.”
