HHS girls golf places 5th in Ft. Morgan, 3rd in Brush

Placing fifth in the Fort Morgan tournament, Holyoke High School’s girls golf team saw a “very successful opening day,” coach Nick Flaa said.
A total of 45 golfers from 11 teams competed in the March 23 tournament at Quail Dunes Golf Club. Competing against Holyoke and other 3A golf teams were 5A Loveland and 4A Northridge and Mountain View. They claimed the top three positions, with Loveland “dominating the field,” Flaa said.
“Being the first tournament, the girls did a lot of good things on the course today and managed it very well,” he said. “The varsity team, all returning players, have retained a wealth of knowledge from the previous seasons, and their experience shows in how they were able to conduct themselves out there and going out with a plan.”
Playing 18 holes in varsity action, Grace Dille shot a 103 for 11th place, Brenna Sullivan 112, Regan Van Overbeke 114 and Anna Jelden 133. Van Overbeke posted a personal best (which she went on to surpass again Monday).
Among JV, who played nine holes, Savannah Burris and Traeli Hutches tied for first place with 61. Kaylee Camblin shot a 67 and Cierra Schelling 75.
“As a whole, we are all struggling to hit quality approach shots from 100 yards and in, and lost many strokes on the putting surface as well,” Flaa said. “If we can figure out the combination of those two weaknesses, I can honestly see 10 shots coming off of each score.”

Competition is tough in Brush
HHS golf then traveled to Bunker Hill Golf Course in Brush on March 26 for their second tournament of the season, a nonleague event.
As a team, Brush finished first with a 296, followed by Yuma 305, Holyoke 308, Wray 328 and Burlington 341. Based on the scores posted Monday, Flaa said, “It’s going to be a very competitive league.”
Individually, Dille placed third among varsity, carding a 97. Sullivan finished ninth with a 104; Van Overbeke placed 11th with a 107; and Jelden carded a 116. Despite new personal bests by both Van Overbeke and Sullivan, the team only finished third. “It shows that not only have we improved, but others are improving as well,” Flaa said.
