HHS is No. 1 in league

Two conference wins last week sealed the deal, and the Holyoke Lady Dragon basketball team was named league champions.

The girls have an 8-0 record in the league with conference wins over Haxtun, Sedgwick County, Wray, Yuma, Merino, Wiggins, Akron and Caliche.

Holyoke will head into the district tournament in the No. 1 spot. Following a bye on Tuesday, Feb. 25, the girls will compete Friday-Saturday, Feb. 28-29, at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling.

“We put ourselves in a good position,” said coach John Baumgartner. The team set goals for the year, he said, and next on their list is winning the district championship.

“They’re on a mission,” he said.

Holyoke 51, Akron 18

Holyoke traveled to Akron Thursday, Feb. 13, for a conference game against the Rams.

“The girls took care of business in the first half,” said Baumgartner. The Lady Dragons outscored Akron 15-2 in the first quarter. Holyoke went on to score 17 points in the second quarter to lead 32-10 at halftime.

Dragon defense again kept the Rams to single digits in the final two quarters. Holyoke outscored them 11-3 in the third and 8-5 in the fourth, for a final score of 51-18.

Baumgartner said the Lady Dragons were moving the ball really well. They were looking for open players, and those girls were making their shots. Holyoke finished the game with 51% field goal accuracy.

Kristin Vieselmeyer led Holyoke’s scoring with 14 points, including six 2-pointers and two for four from the line.

Lauren Herman had 10 rebounds and four steals, and Emily Jelden totaled 12 assists.

Elise Krogmeier, Herman and Vieselmeyer each blocked a shot.
