HHS sees Merino victory

Holyoke High School girls basketball was victorious in its Friday, Feb. 1, game against Merino, 48-23.
Coach John Baumgartner said the team was defensively on-point and gave up few rebounds, while Taeryn Trumper, who was injured the previous week, returned to start.
“It was good to see her getting in the groove again,” Baumgartner said. “We got off to a good lead in the first quarter, and we got a lot of people in the game.”
Holyoke came out swinging Friday, pushing a nine-point lead to outscore Merino in every quarter and win by 25 points.
In the first quarter, Holyoke put up 11 to Merino’s two, both of which were free throws. The Dragons earned another 13 points in the second quarter to Merino’s six, putting Holyoke at a sizable advantage going into the second half.
Merino continued to struggle, falling further behind in a 13-6 third quarter, before losing after being narrowly edged out in the fourth.
Taeryn Trumper led the team in total points with 18 and rebounds with six. Emily Jelden led in steals with two and assists with five.
