HHS softball crushes Chase County, Yuma

In doubleheaders with Chase County and Yuma last week, Holyoke managed to shut down three of the four games early with hefty leads. The one game that went the full seven innings marked four wins in as many games for the Dragon softball team.

On Sept. 3, the Dragons traveled to Imperial, Nebraska, to play the Chase County Longhorns. Holyoke won 17-9 and 19-17.

More than two weeks after the team’s first home game, the Dragons returned to their own field to host Yuma on Sept. 5 — and HHS looked like an entirely different team. Where they struggled to get their footing last month, the Dragons looked confident and at ease on Thursday. Holyoke swept the doubleheader, beating Yuma 14-2 and 17-2.

Holyoke 17, Chase County 9

Holyoke’s 17-9 win over Chase County last Tuesday started strong, with the first four Dragon batters scoring runs straight away. The Longhorns then managed just two runs in their turn at bat.

Holyoke was back at the top of the order at the start of the second inning. This time, the Dragons had eight players in a row cross home plate before the Longhorns could slow them down. With the score at 12-2, Chase County was scoreless in the second, and neither team scored in the third.

Back at bat in the fourth inning, Holyoke put up three more runs and extended the lead 15-2. The following home half was Chase County’s biggest with six runs added to the scoreboard. The Dragons scored two more runs, and the Longhorns scored one. When Chase County trailed 19-7 after five innings, the Nebraska mercy rule dictated that the game end early.

During Holyoke’s time at bat, Shianne Willmon hit two doubles and a single; Emma Thompson hit a double; Sirissa Casady and Sarah Razo hit three singles apiece; Lauren Herman hit two singles; and Haley Van Overbeke, Correy Koellner and Victoria Race had one single each.

Razo and Herman each had three runs and an RBI; Willmon had two runs and five RBIs; Casady two runs and one RBI; Koellner two runs; Thompson one run and three RBIs; Race one run and two RBIs; and Van Overbeke and Clover Adler two runs each.

Casady stole four bases, Razo and Herman two apiece, and Koellner one.

Razo started on the mound for HHS. In 1.1 innings she faced eight batters. She struck out one, walked two, and allowed three hits and two earned runs. Aliyah Engle faced 15 batters in 2.1 innings. She struck out two, walked three, and gave up six hits and five earned runs. Van Overbeke pitched one inning. Facing five batters, she allowed two hits.
