HHS swim team blends experience with young enthusiasm

Holyoke High School swimmers will be diving right in with their first competition scheduled this Saturday, Dec. 3. The Legacy Invite at Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton will begin at 9 a.m.

It being the first meet of the season, head coach Emily Krogmeier is focusing on getting the athletes ready for competition by building endurance and focusing on the little technical aspects of the sport.

“This season is going to be competitive, so we just keep reminding the girls to go out and have fun,” Krogmeier said. “It’s the beginning of the season, and we have time to grow and improve.”

Krogmeier is assisted by Dani Brandt for their second year as the high school girls’ swim team coaches. Aly Brinkema also joins them as a volunteer coach.

This year’s team is made up of just seven people, but there is a good balance of new and seasoned swimmers. Upperclassmen include seniors Summer Martin and Aly Lock of Haxtun, and juniors Addie Goldenstein and Tayla Martin. All four went to state last year, and Martin earned an impressive eighth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle. Needless to say, they all are hoping for a repeat appearance this year with even better results.
