HHS taking 8 events to state
Twelve Holyoke High School swimmers saw an exhilarating Tri Valley Conference Meet at Thompson Valley in Loveland on Feb. 2-3, and half of them are now gearing up for the 2018 Colorado 3A State Swim Meet.
Coaches Adria Colver and Aly Brinkema were thrilled by the team’s performance at conference and are looking forward to the state meet as well. This year’s team is amazing, Colver said, and throughout the season they’ve not seen a bad practice or a bad meet. “We’re expecting another good meet at state,” she added.
Representing HHS at state for her third time is senior Regan Van Overbeke. Throughout this year’s season, she qualified in three events. Only allowed two individual events at state, she will be competing in the 500-yard freestyle, which she also swam at the 2017 state meet, and the 200-yard freestyle.
Sophomore Lali Marquez is returning to state for her second appearance in two events, the 100-yard butterfly and the 50-yard freestyle.
Freshman Rylee Schneller also qualified in three events during the regular season. The two she’s taking to state are the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley.
Likewise, the Holyoke team had three qualifying relays and had to select two for the state meet. The 200-yard medley relay is slated to include freshman Haley Van Overbeke, Schneller, Marquez and Regan Van Overbeke.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team is made up of Haley Van Overbeke, sophomore Traeli Hutches, Regan Van Overbeke and Schneller. Senior Anna Jelden, a 2017 state competitor, has been selected as an alternate for this year’s relays.
3A state competition begins Thursday, Feb. 8, at 4:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center in Thornton and continues through Friday, Feb. 9.
