HHS track eyes state competition
Several HHS Dragons have a good chance to gain state competition experience after improving their times at the Dick Evans Invite Tuesday, April 25, in Wray.
“Once again, the kids did well,” said coach Dusty Sprague, naming Luis Chafino for his personal best in pole vault and Taeryn Trumper for her PB in the 100 meter dash. Emily Jelden tied her PB in pole vault, which was set at the April 22 Kersey meet. “We only have two weeks to improve times to qualify for state, so we really need to perform our best at the meets we have left.”
State qualifiers are the top 18 competitors in each event from across the state in each class from the entire season. As of Monday, May 1, Chafino is currently ranked eighth in the state in boys pole vault, as is Jelden in girls pole vault. Trumper is ranked fourth in the state in the 100 meter dash and seventh in the long jump.
Other Holyoke performances ranked high enough to be competitive on a state level are all in girls events, including the 4x100 meter relay, 4x200 meter relay, 4x400 meter relay, 4x800 meter relay and Trumper in the 200 meter dash.
Trumper had a particularly outstanding meet in Wray Saturday, placing first in the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash and long jump.
Additionally, she and Emily Jelden, Jacky Mosqueda and Josie Herman placed second in the 800 meter sprint medley. Jelden also placed third in pole vault.
Overall, Holyoke girls placed second out of 17 competing teams, and the boys placed ninth.
