Trumper qualifies in seven events to lead stacked young team

A team heavy in underclassmen is bound for the Colorado 2A state track meet Thursday-Saturday, May 18-20, at the Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood.

Seven HHS girls will compete in eight events, including senior Brook Prottsman, junior Taylor Hendrix, sophomores Kyra Loutensock and Jacky Mosqueda, and freshmen Taeryn Trumper, Emily Jelden and Josie Herman. Freshman Luis Chafino rounds out the group as the only Holyoke boy qualified for state.

“This is a great group of kids,” said coach Dusty Sprague. “They’ve worked their tails off.”

Those qualifying had to rank in the top 18 in the entire state in a 2A track event.

Trumper absolutely dominated this season, qualifying as a freshman in an impressive seven events. In individual events, she ranks second in the state in long jump with a distance of 17’2”, and fourth in the state in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes, running a :12.86 and a :26.12 in the respective races.

Additionally, Trumper helped qualify all four of the Holyoke relays that will race at state, including the 800 meter sprint medley, the 4x100 meter, 4x200 meter and 4x400 meter. However, as competitors are limited to four events per meet, Trumper will only run in the 4x400 meter at state.

Jelden has been another freshman powerhouse, qualifying as 14th in the pole vault with a top height of 8’4” and also qualifying in each of the four relays going to state. With the four-event limitation, she will run in the 4x400, 4x200 and 4x100 meter relays.

Chafino, the boys team’s lone Dragon headed to the competition, is also a freshman, ranked 9th in pole vault with a height of 10’4”.
