HHS wrestlers face tough schedule as season opens

A 10-member, predominantly sophomore wrestling team will open the 2017-18 season Saturday, Dec. 2, at the St. Francis, Kansas Invite, with action starting at 8:30 a.m.
Leading the team as returning letterwinners are senior Antoni Martinez; juniors Jessy Mosqueda and Jesus Trejo; and sophomores Luis Chafino, Deacon Dittmer and Andy Lopez.
Also on the team are sophomores Remington Hielscher, Anthony Rojo, Miguel Soto and Nain Vasquez.
Looking to the season with optimism, coach Dusty McConnell said he thinks it will be a successful year for the wrestlers. “They have all been in tough situations and know how to battle,” he said, referencing their experience on the mats.
It will be a tough schedule this year, as the team will enter tournaments with much larger schools. McConnell noted that last year they competed in tourneys at a junior varsity level, but this year they’ll be entered as varsity wrestlers.
