Holyoke boys win consolation game in Highland Canine Classic

As is typical, Holyoke High School basketball started its season at the Highland Canine Classic in Ault on Dec. 7. In the boys bracket, Highland won the championship game 93-59 against Dawson School. Holyoke won the consolation game 58-52 against Liberty Common.

Earlier in the day, Dawson beat Holyoke 71-55, and Highland beat Liberty Common 86-37.

Holyoke 55, Dawson 71

Holyoke’s first game of the 2019-20 season was against the Dawson School Mustangs last Saturday. Though the two teams looked to be quite evenly matched throughout much of the game, the Mustangs had a strong final quarter, securing a 71-55 win.

The Dragons started the first quarter ready to play. Slaten Burris, Miles Sprague and Caleb Deaver racked up points two at a time, and Ethan Johnson finished off the period with a 3. When time ran out, HHS had a narrow 15-14 lead.

In the second quarter, Holyoke struggled to make its shots, and the Mustangs capitalized on the dozen free throws they got to take. By halftime, Dawson led 29-19.

Holyoke put up a real fight in the third quarter, outscoring Dawson 23-17. Despite a couple of 3-pointers put up by Johnson and Sprague as well as several 2-pointers and a smattering of foul shots, the Dragons still trailed 46-42 going into the final period.
