Holyoke Dragons shut out Cougars, fall behind Eagles

In boys basketball, the Holyoke Dragons pocketed another victory Friday in an away matchup against Sedgwick County’s Cougars.

“We played really well against Sedgwick,” said Holyoke Head Coach Colbey Stumpf.

From the start, the game progressed in the Dragons’ favor. Sedgwick’s Jace Ehmke and Brady Mollendor were the only contributors to their first-quarter points. By landing two 2-pointers, SedgCo’s Cougars were held up by four points altogether. Meanwhile,  Holyoke every starter aside from Irving Dominguez sank in points to make the score 18-4.

The Cougars ran back onto the court, ready for battle after the second-quarter buzzer rang. New scorers from Sedgwick County gave it their all. The Cougars’ Jaxon Carlson, Kaden Harens and Ehmke made points a priority, gaining 11 by the beginning of halftime. SedgCo’s Harens made consistent layups and added six points to the Cougars’ team. Harens and Holyoke’s Wyatt Sprague tied the most points this quarter, as Sprague also made consistent layups.

As Dominguez, Manuel Gonzalez, Reid Sprague and Chase Johnson made their first couple of points, the scoreboard read 33-15 at the end of the first half. Stumpf described the difference between the two teams’ results: “We do really well with our transitions: offense to defense and defense to offense.”
