Holyoke girls split games with St. Francis, Caliche

The short-handed Holyoke girls basketball team split a pair of home games against one-loss teams last week.

The Dragons’ week began Thursday night with a makeup game against the Indians at St. Francis, Kansas. The Indians’ only loss on the season was in its final game before the holiday moratorium and this game was the first one for both teams following the break.

Holyoke kicked the game off right with a breakaway layup by Audrey Talavera off the opening tip. Playing without senior starter Grace Roberts, the Dragons’ only other basket of the quarter came on a 3-pointer by Nicole Schlachter with under three minutes to go in the first quarter.

Elise Krogmeier went to work in the post for Holyoke in the second quarter. Krogmeier made three baskets and added a free throw. With a basket by Hannah Lindholm, Holyoke trailed 14-22 at halftime.

Krogmeier added six points and Talavera a 3 pointer in the third quarter, but the fourth quarter got away from Holyoke.

Trailing 23-33, the Dragons struggled to stop St. Francis as the clock wound down. The Indians made three of their six 3-pointers and hit all four of their free throws in the fourth quarter. Lindholm made two baskets for Holyoke and Schlachter nailed another three in the final minutes of the 31-53 loss.

Krogmeier led the Dragons with 14 points. Anessa Colglazier had a team high six rebounds.

Head Coach Arlan Scholl said St. Francis had a bigger, more difficult team to play against, but he felt like the Dragons played hard and represented themselves well in the game.
