Holyoke High School boys beat Kiowa in weekend basketball action

Holyoke High School boys basketball had a busy schedule this weekend. On Jan. 12, varsity, JV and C team each had games against Sedgwick County in Ovid. On Jan. 13, HHS faced Kiowa at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling for a varsity game. That same day, Holyoke’s C team traveled to Akron for games against both Akron and Yuma.
The highlight of the weekend was a 49-32 varsity victory over Kiowa. Sedgwick County swept Friday’s games, 47-37 in varsity, 33-15 JV, and 26-20 C team. HHS C team, however, won both of Saturday’s games, 50-5 Akron, and 26-11 Yuma.

Holyoke 49, Kiowa 32
Holyoke had a respectable start to the Saturday afternoon game against Kiowa. Small contributions made by players throughout the lineup added up to 10 points after the first quarter. Defensively, they held Kiowa to only nine. In the second quarter, only seven points were added to the scoreboard total, for a low halftime score of 14-12, Holyoke.
Coach Scott Dille noted that Holyoke’s press in the second half of the game made a big difference. “Kiowa threw a triangle and two against us, which is something that is rarely seen,” he said. “It took us a while to figure out how to attack it, but I thought we did a pretty good job in the second half.”
In the third quarter the Dragons racked up 19 points, more than doubling their score and extending their lead to 33-18. Still, HHS didn’t get complacent. Kiowa fought hard in the final quarter and added 14 to their score. Holyoke met the challenge, posting 16 points for a 49-32 win.
“I was proud of the way our kids dug in deep and finished that game out,” Dille reflected.
Blake Mosenteen was Holyoke’s lead scorer. He made 13 points and was three for four from the free-throw line. Mason King scored the second-most, with 11 points. As a team, HHS shot 68 percent from the foul line, while Kiowa made 79 percent.
Tate Dille led the team in rebounds, 12, and blocks, 3. Mosenteen had the most assists with six, and steals, four.
“The kids have continued to take strides forward which is huge for us,” coach Dille concluded.
