Holyoke holds off SedgCo, Wray

The Lady Dragon basketball team can check off two more conference wins after playing at Sedgwick County Friday, Jan. 24, and hosting Wray Saturday, Jan. 25.

“This puts us in the driver’s seat right now,” said coach John Baumgartner in regard to how conference play is stacking up at this point in the season.

Overall, the Lady Dragons are 11-1, including three conference wins.

The varsity game in Ovid didn’t start quite the way Baumgartner had hoped. Holyoke finished the first quarter trailing Sedgwick County 5-4, but a better second quarter paved the way to Holyoke’s 15-13 lead at halftime.

The team made some adjustments in the second half and were able to put up some points. HHS outscored the Cougars 15-12 in the third and 15-8 in the fourth for the 45-33 win.

Baumgartner said both teams were feeling the pressure of such an important conference game. He praised the Dragon defense, noting Sedgwick County really struggled to score.

He also praised the team for their improvement on free throws. Holyoke made 13 out of 23 for 57%.
