Holyoke softball falls to Chase County
Holyoke softball started its season with a nonleague doubleheader at Chase County, Nebraska, where the Dragons lost two. Although the team struggled offensively, coach Sherman Kage said that they played hard and did a lot of things well in the Aug. 29 games.
He commended freshman Haley Van Overbeke for pitching her first ever high school softball game. She was called upon when the team’s sophomore pitcher was unable to play, and according to Kage, she did phenomenal.
Despite the disappointing 11-3 and 9-1 losses, Kage noted that the experience gave them some concrete areas to work on in practice.
Holyoke 1, Chase County 9
The first game between Holyoke and Chase County ended after five innings, due to Nebraska’s eight-run mercy rule.
Chase County scored three runs in the first inning and two in the second, while holding Holyoke scoreless. In the third inning neither team scored. In the fourth inning, back at the top of the lineup, Julia Casady took a base on balls. She went on to steal home for the Dragons’ only run of the game.
