Holyoke sweeps Yuma doubleheader

Saturday, May 6, saw the Holyoke High School baseball team win its first game against Yuma 7-3 with a big sixth inning. The Dragons went on to win the second game 15-3 in five innings.

The pair of wins in Yuma put Holyoke’s record to 9-4 for the season, and the team has a busy week ahead. HHS was scheduled to play a doubleheader in Wiggins on May 9. On Thursday, May 11, at 2 p.m. the Dragons will host Wray for a doubleheader that was rescheduled earlier in the season. On Saturday, May 13, Holyoke will play a single game against Limon in Wray at 10 a.m.

Regular-season play wraps up next Tuesday, May 16, with a doubleheader in Julesburg at 2 p.m. The games throughout the coming week will determine the regional bracket. The top 32 teams will earn a berth in the single-elimination regional tournament.

Holyoke 7, Yuma 3

“I was really pleased with our attitude in the first game,” Coach Jimmy French said. “When we were having trouble putting it away for the first innings, we stayed positive and kept making the plays we could and finally came away with the win.”

The game started with each team scoring one run in the first inning. In the second, neither team scored, and the score was tied 1-1 going into the third. Yuma pulled ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the third, but Holyoke pulled ahead with two runs in the top of the fourth. Undeterred, Yuma posted another run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score at 3-3.

The sixth inning was the turning point for the Dragons, who racked up four more runs and extended their lead to 7-3. They were similarly successful on the defensive side and kept Yuma from scoring again for the rest of the game.
