Holyoke Swim Club prepares for league after Wray meet
Holyoke swim club finished its most recent swim meet just 11.5 points behind the first place Goodland, Kansas, team. Goodland earned 389.5 points, followed by Holyoke 378, Burlington 242, Colby, Kansas, 108, Oakley, Kansas, 71, Oberlin, Kansas, 70, and Wray 54.5.
The July 1 meet in Wray was the last regular meet of the Northwest Kansas Swim League season. This weekend teams will compete in the league meet in Goodland, July 7-8.
In preparation for league, the Wray meet included the 500 yard freestyle event for swimmers 13 and older. Not usually included in the lineup, the 500 is one of the league events. Holyoke’s 14-year-old Haley Van Overbeke and 17-year-old Regan Van Overbeke each won first place in their respective 500 yard races.
At league, all longer distance races will be swam Friday. In the 8 and under division, the 100 yard individual medley and 50 yard freestyle are considered their distance events. Saturday swimmers will compete in all relays and short sprints.
Coach Adria Colver said she is looking forward to seeing Holyoke’s performance at league after they looked great in Wray. Some swimmers, she noted, will face a challenge, swimming as much as 1,000 yards in various races on the first day.
