Holyoke swimming continues to succeed at Berthoud meet

Holyoke High School girls swim team faced its toughest competition thus far at the Berthoud/Mountain View Tri last Thursday, Dec. 6, where several Holyoke swimmers and relay teams placed, lowered times, and qualified for yet another state event.
Coach Aly Brinkema said that, despite being pitted against year-round programs supported by local club teams, her team isn’t one to back down from a challenge.
“We never look for the easy win,” she said. “Our swimmers have cultivated their own style of mental toughness, and we saw each one of them embrace the tough competition and earn the equally important hard win or loss with grace.”
In the 200-yard freestyle, Rylee Schneller placed first and qualified for state with a time of 2:15.95. Demiah Hernandez also placed fifth in 2:33.90.
Schneller and Hernandez, along with Lali Marquez and Haley Van Overbeke, placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 1:55.35. Hailey Durbin, Josie Schlachter, Jackie Valenzuela and Danielle Wilkening placed seventh, 2:17.22.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Marquez placed second, 1:10.33; Amy Mackay eighth, 1:34.79; and Durbin ninth, 1:45.98.
