Holyoke track breaks 20 personal records in Haxtun twilight meet

Boys gain fastest time in the state for 4x400-meter relay

Holyoke hosted Haxtun’s Relay Meet on Friday, April 28, at Max Bernard’s Field. Overall, Holyoke broke 20 personal records; some students even broke records at a state level. This meet was a twilight meet, with competitors waiting to start running until 2 in the afternoon and continuing up until 9 p.m. The boys placed second during the meet, while the girls placed sixth overall.

During the last event scheduled, but not least, Coach Jacinda Distefano said, “[The boys] got to race under the lights and [they] pushed each other.”

The boys’ 4x400-meter was the most successful of the relays. Reid Sprague, Wyatt Sprague, Cash Weber and anchor Max Kleve ran the fastest in the state. They ran the relay at only 3:29.35 minutes, placing first in state and first at the track meet. Yuma received second place with a time that bumped it up to the third-ranked relay team in the State of Colorado. Haxtun placed third and had a time that bumped it up to first-ranked in Colorado’s 1A district.

“I was incredibly impressed with Isaac Cummings, cutting another 30 seconds off his 2-mile for third place this week,” Distefano said. Cummings ran the 2-mile at 13:10.16 minutes.

Teagan Martin placed first in the mile at 5:04.2 minutes, reaching a new personal record. Martin also placed third in the 800-meter sprint at 2:19.78 minutes. Cummings placed fourth in the mile, running 5:33.75 minutes.

Amongst the boys’ field events, triple, high and long jumps made leaps and bounds toward first place. Reid Sprague placed second in the triple jump by jumping 38 feet, 8 inches. Trey Oakley followed behind him by placing third in the same event at 38 feet, 5 inches.
