Holyoke wins 2, loses 2 in Brush softball tournament

Dragon softball traveled to Brush for a tournament Sept. 13-14 and came home with two wins and two losses. In both days of the tournament, Holyoke lost its first game and won its second. On Friday, Brush beat Holyoke 16-4 and Holyoke beat Florence 8-1. On Saturday, Fort Lupton beat Holyoke 8-3 and Holyoke beat Valley 9-5.

With the next varsity game scheduled Sept. 28, HHS has a nice long stretch of practice to address its weaknesses, work on situational play and get healthy, coach Sherman Kage said. His hope is for the Dragons to come out strong immediately, playing like they did in the days’ second games in Brush.

Holyoke 4, Brush 16

In Holyoke’s first game last Friday, Brush proved a formidable opponent, winning 16-4. The first inning started off well enough for the Dragons, and against a lesser team, it may have been sufficient. Lauren Herman got on base with a single, and Shianne Willmon followed with a double. Herman managed a run before the Beetdiggers took their turn at bat and racked up nine runs of their own.

Recovering from such a deficit ended up being impossible. As Kage put it, “You can’t have bad innings against good teams.” But the Dragons kept at it nonetheless.

Clover Adler started the second inning by taking a base on balls, which led to the team’s second run. Haley Van Overbeke hit a single, and courtesy runner Aliyah Engle scored a run. Though Herman hit a double and Willmon a single, they were both left on base. Holyoke held Brush to just one run in the bottom of the inning for a score of 10-3.
