Holyoke wins in Colby

Earthquake near Plainville, Kansas, is the talk of the swim meet

Holyoke swimmers and their families spending the night in Colby, Kansas, prior to the June 22 swim meet awoke to something rather unusual: an earthquake. Shortly before 3 a.m., a 4.5 magnitude earthquake  near Plainville, Kansas, was felt 90 miles away by the visiting athletes.
Though it was quite the topic of conversation among the Northwest Kansas Swim League teams Saturday, the quake couldn’t outshine  first-place finish by the Holyoke Swim Club. Unseasonably cold weather meant all relays were canceled, but in the events that were swam, HSC racked up 375 points. Goodland, Kansas, followed with 266; Burlington 244; Colby 168; Wray 129; Oakley, Kansas, 75; and Oberlin, Kansas, 69.
Despite conditions that were far from ideal, two HSC swimmers managed to set new pool records. Swimming in the 13-14 girls division, Tayla Martin finished the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:18.86. She broke a record set by teammate Rylee Schneller in 2017.
Schneller set a new record herself in the 15-18 girls 100-meter breaststroke with a 1:27.55.
One more NWKSL meet is scheduled in Oakley this Saturday, June 29, before the season finale league meet in Wray is held July 5-6.
