IMCA Championship Night coming to Phillips County Raceway Sunday

It’s the last chance in the 2019 season for race fans to witness hometown action Sunday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. at Phillips County Raceway at the fairgrounds in Holyoke.

IMCA Championship Night will provide a road to the nationals for top season winners.

POWRI lightning sprints and the CAT tour are on the docket. Racing will feature mods, stocks, sport mods, hobby stocks, 600 sprints, dwarfs and compacts.

Raceway promoter Joe Bellm hopes for a great turnout to end this year’s season. He’s also optimistic about next year — announcing that eight races will be scheduled on the first and third Fridays in June through September.

Bellm’s 14-year-old daughter, Layne, has started racing and won third place in the Aug. 24 hobby stock division at El Paso County Raceway in Calhan.

Michael Cost, owner of Clear Sky News, reported on those races, noting that local racetracks are the Great American Coliseum.
