Starting this month and continuing throughout the summer, kids ages 7-15 will have several opportunities to learn and play golf through the City of Holyoke recreation department. Brent Vasa, a former Holyoke resident, will be teaching three golf clinics and running a junior golf tournament to conclude the schedule.
Each of the three clinics will span two days, a Saturday and Sunday. They each have a different emphasis, so participants can complete all three or choose the areas they like best. They are as follows:
—April 21-22 will cover an introduction, areas of the golf course, GAS (grip, aim, setup), putting green and chipping.
—May 19-20 will feature fundamentals on full-swing shots (club mechanics).
—July 14-15 will be on driver and specialty shots (body mechanics), followed by an overview of GAS, club mechanics and body mechanics.
Vasa emphasized that the golf clinics will be suitable for kids with any level of experience. For some it could be the first opportunity to get a club in their hands, to learn the fundamentals. Those with existing skills, however, will still be able to benefit from the instruction, he added.
