Lady Dragons are tourney champs x2

Varsity, JV win big at Akron

The Holyoke Lady Dragons were named tournament champions not once but twice Saturday, Sept. 25, at Akron.

Both the varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams were declared the day’s winners and took home T-shirts to prove it.

Coach Michelle Vieselmeyer said the varsity girls are starting to gel as a team and are trusting each other on the court.

In the first game of the day, the Lady Dragons beat Arickaree/Woodlin in three sets: 25-17, 25-12 and 25-14.

With 34 kills attributed to Holyoke, the girls were being very aggressive at the net, commented Vieselmeyer.

Kristin Vieselmeyer led with 27 attacks including 15 kills while Elyce Talavera set the ball 64 times including 18 assists for kills.

Talavera served 22 times with six aces, and Vieselmeyer had 18 serves with six aces.

Elise Krogmeier topped blocks with three, and Tamara Penzing totaled 23 digs and 14 serve receives.

The Lady Dragons were “calm and collected,” said coach Vieselmeyer, in their second match of the day. They defeated Union Colony Prep in three sets: 25-16, 25-21 and 25-16.

On the stat sheet, Kristin Vieselmeyer attacked the ball 16 times for 13 kills, grabbed three blocks and totaled eight serve receives; Talavera set the ball 31 times for nine kills and served 24 times for nine aces; and Penzing hustled for 13 digs.

Holyoke’s game against Akron was their best of the day and their best effort all season, according to the coach. The Lady Dragons claimed the victory in three sets: 25-12, 25-15 and 25-16.

She said the team eliminated errors in all areas and had especially good success in serving, totaling 14 aces for the match.
