Lady Dragons beat Sedgwick County, lose close game to Wray

Holyoke High School girls basketball split its weekend lineup against Sedgwick County and Wray last Friday and Saturday, Jan. 18-19, winning the first game 50-15 and losing the second 40-46.
Coach John Baumgartner said the team’s victory over Sedgwick County wasn’t unexpected, given Holyoke’s prior win in December and a missing Cougar starter. He complimented Holyoke’s defense in particular, which gave the Dragons room to build a large lead.
“We stuck to them pretty well, and we really caused some problems,” he said. “And we got a lot of people involved in scoring, which is good, and that makes our team so much better.”
Of Saturday’s loss, Baumgartner said Holyoke’s offensive presence has been and remains a problem. Despite outscoring Wray in the second half, Holyoke was unable to stop its rival from sprinting ahead in the first.
“That’s not us,” he said. “We got them to four, but we just couldn’t get a break.
