Lady Dragons breeze past St. Francis, Haxtun

Holyoke Lady Dragon varsity basketball team marked down its fourth and fifth wins of the season Tuesday, Dec. 17, in St. Francis, Kansas, and Thursday, Dec. 19, at home with Haxtun.

Coach John Baumgartner said Tuesday was a true road test that measured how the girls could play under pressure on an opponent’s court. The Holyoke girls proved themselves with a 51-38 win over a highly competitive team.

Thursday was another high pressure situation against their Phillips County rival and seasoned coach Arlan Scholl, who formerly coached in Holyoke. Baumgartner said the Lady Dragons came onto the court very focused, paving the way to a big first-half lead and a 50-17 win over the Bulldogs.

Baumgartner said the Holyoke girls got off to a slow offensive start in St. Francis — both teams were tied 8-8 in the first quarter — but in the second and third periods, the Dragon offense really began to shine. “We handled their pressure,” he said.

Kristin Vieselmeyer’s 10 2-pointers and two 3s from Sarah Razo made up the bulk of Holyoke’s 17 points in the second quarter, putting Holyoke ahead 25-17 at halftime.
