Lady Dragons runners-up in districts

Holyoke girls basketball team made tremendous strides at last week’s district tournament. Seeded No. 3, the Dragons earned an upset win over No. 2 seed Wray 50-44 and placed second overall after a close game to No. 1 seed Yuma, 36-46.
Coach John Baumgartner said that, after an easy win over Akron Tuesday, the team demonstrated a high level of endurance against the Eagles.
“Physically and mentally, I think we were the tougher team in quarter four, and that’s why we won,” he said. “[Assistant coach Ben Rahe] used the word ‘resilient,’ and I think that’s a good word to describe us.”
The game tied multiple times, and wasn’t decided until the final quarter, when the Dragons were able to push past a narrow deficit suffered in the third to win.
On Sunday, Baumgartner said the team ran out of steam in the second half of the game, but still gave its top-ranked opponent plenty to worry about.
“We battled, and I think we gave them everything they could have handled,” he said.

Holyoke 50, Wray 44
Holyoke’s Feb. 21 semifinals game against Wray was a tooth-and-nail fight between two of the region’s top 2A programs. A dramatic comeback by the Dragons in the fourth quarter decided the game in Holyoke’s favor, 50-44, and guaranteed a finals matchup against Yuma.
The Dragons held the higher ground in the first half, but not by much — they scored 11 points in each quarter to 9- and 10-point quarters by Wray.
Holyoke was not as fortunate in the third quarter, when Wray surged ahead to score 18 points, leaving Holyoke in a precarious position, down by two.
