Lady Dragons split Thursday doubleheader with Yuma

Dragon softball split a doubleheader at Yuma last Thursday, Aug. 30, racking up a 17-20 loss and a 17-1 victory against the Indians.
Sophomore Haley Van Overbeke had to sit out both games due to an injury, which left a pitching hole that was filled in the second game by Sarah Razo, but which coach Sherman Kage said likely cost them the first game.
Still, he pointed out that replacement pitchers Hailey Mavis and Molly Brown kept it close.
“We had to battle with what we had,” Kage said. “For those girls being thrown into what they had never done before, they did a great job.”

Holyoke 17, Yuma 20
Holyoke spent the first three innings earning a tight 11-10 lead over Yuma, but even a handful of late-game runs wasn’t enough to overcome a nine-run streak by Yuma in the bottom of the fourth.
Despite a slow start, the Dragons closed a run gap in the third inning, in part thanks to a homer by Sirissa Casady, and entered the fourth one run up. Batters struggled to connect, however, and the inning ended quickly for Holyoke. Yuma went on to score nine runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Batting for Holyoke, Casady hit a home run; Mavis, three doubles; Lauren Herman and Correy Koellner, two doubles; Victoria Race, four singles; Brown and Brook Schneider, two singles; and Shianne Willmon and Gabi Gordon, one single.
Casady and Mavis led RBIs with four each, followed by Brown and Willmon, each with two.
Herman, Koellner and Gordon each stole two bases; and Brown, Race and Mavis, one.
Brown pitched 2.1 innings, facing 24 batters. She struck out two, walked 13 and gave up 12 earned runs on four hits. Mavis pitched the remaining 3.2 innings, facing 28 batters. She struck out four, walked 12 and gave up eight earned runs on one hit.
