Lady Dragons suffer close losses to Haxtun, Limon

Holyoke High School girls basketball lost its Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11-12, games against Haxtun and Limon by one and six points respectively, continuing a four-game streak of near-misses for the team.
Both games saw the Dragons trade the lead with their rivals and come out of the first half on top, only to be shouldered out in the second.
Coach John Baumgartner said he felt the team was struggling to bring their offensive play up to the level of their defense.
“It’s tough, but man our kids play hard,” he said. “Sometimes it doesn’t go your way, and those are the breaks right now.”
Of the full-house home game versus Haxtun, he said both teams put on good performance, but Holyoke failed to respond in a closing exchange that saw the Dragons briefly pull ahead of the Bulldogs, before being shut down, 37-38.
“It was great to see the student body and the community come out to support us,” Baumgartner said. “Unfortunately, one of us had to lose, and it was us.”
The Limon game saw the Dragons lose control in the third quarter and fail to make up points in the fourth, despite outscoring their opponent. The game was lost 42-48.
“We just have to knock down more shots,” Baumgartner said.
