Lady Dragons tame Cougars, stumble against Yuma

Holyoke High School girls varsity basketball team had a mixed week, winning its Feb. 12 game at Burlington and falling in its Feb. 14 home game against Yuma.
Coach John Baumgartner said equilibrium between Holyoke’s offense and defense set the team up for success against the Cougars.
“To go down there and get a win by 20 was pretty good,” he said. “They definitely got a little flustered with us.”
However, Thursday’s game saw the team get into trouble early and struggle against a deficit for the rest of the evening.
“We got off to a slow start, and kind of dug ourselves a hole. We had a big hole to overcome,” he said. “But giving our kids credit, they didn’t quit, and we battled to the end.”
He added that the first district tournament game against Akron, which was scheduled for Feb. 19, meant a clean slate for the 12-7 team.
“We’ve been telling the kids that our record right now is 0-0,” he said. “Hopefully everybody’s ready to go.”

Holyoke 53, Burlington 33
Holyoke’s week began with a solid 20-point victory over Burlington, including three quarters in which the Dragons outscored their opponent.
Holyoke started planning its win in the first quarter, putting up 10 points to Burlington’s seven. The second quarter included four consecutive shots made from the line by Emily Jelden, which set Holyoke up to launch ahead by 21.
The Dragons remained ahead in the third quarter, and the fourth quarter gave some of the team’s younger players the chance to join the action, at the end of which Holyoke won 53-33.
Taeryn Trumper led the team in total points with 16, and Jelden scored 11. Kaylee Camblin led in rebounds with eight. Taeryn Trumper and Jelden led steals with three each, and Jelden led assists with five.
