Long-range prowess, strong finish give Akron a win in Holyoke
Despite ending in a 62-52 loss to Akron, the Feb. 7 boys basketball game at home was the kind of contest that’s fun to watch and leaves fans proud of the Dragons regardless of the final score.
From the start, the Dragons moved the ball quickly and put themselves in position to shoot often. Though it seemed at times that the shots just would not drop, HHS kept at it. By the end of the first quarter, six of the seven guys who’d played managed to score, and the game was tied at 13. It was clear from early on, however, that Akron was going to be a threat from outside.
In the second period, Holyoke continued to see shots put up across the roster. Defensively, the Dragons kept all but one of the Rams from scoring, and the home team led 25-21 at the half.
Back for the third quarter, Akron’s Gabe Chapin returned with a vengeance. He made four 3-pointers in that period alone, helping the Rams add 20 points to the scoreboard. Nevertheless, a team effort on the Dragon side added 19, keeping HHS ahead 44-41.
