Marquez is state qualifier
Adding to the already lengthy list of events in which Holyoke High School has qualified for the girls 3A state swim meet, Lali Marquez is now eligible in the 100-yard butterfly. The HHS 400-yard freestyle relay team also qualified at the Jan. 9 triangular with Valley and Estes Park in Gilcrest.
Marquez tied for first place in the event last Tuesday with a time of 1:09.02. The 400-yard relay team was made up of Rylee Schneller, Haley Van Overbeke, Marquez and Regan Van Overbeke. They placed second with a time of 4:13.29.
Coach Adria Colver noted that they’ve reached a point in the season when swimmers are very tired. HHS, however, dug deep at the Valley Triangular, and several swimmers achieved personal bests throughout the meet.
The Estes Park team finished first overall with 124 points. Colver acknowledged that their team is typically very strong. Holyoke scored 91 points, beating Valley’s 81.
In other relays, Holyoke took first place in the 200-yard medley relay and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The medley included Haley Van Overbeke, Schneller, Marquez and Regan Van Overbeke, who clocked 2:06.39. The freestyle team was made up of Traeli Hutches, Amy Mackay, Anna Jelden and Jackie Valenzuela, who finished in 2:17.16.
In individual events, Holyoke took first in half of the eight races. In addition to Marquez’s 100-yard butterfly, Schneller had a 2:24.05 in the 200-yard individual medley and a 1:16.50 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Regan Van Overbeke clocked a 6:07.58 in the 500-yard freestyle. She also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:16.44.
Haley Van Overbeke claimed a second-place with 0:28.45 in the 50-yard freestyle and a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, 1:02.80.
In the 100-yard backstroke, HHS finished in three of the point-scoring positions. Marquez finished third, 1:15.56; Mackay fourth, 1:19.57; and Juli Hernandez sixth, 1:34.08.
