Masks required in basketball

As Season B for Colorado High School Activities Association kicks off, girls and boys basketball are the only sports in which masks are required during competition.

Holyoke Activities Director John Baumgartner reported this information at the Jan. 19 Board of Education meeting.

Superintendent Kyle Stumpf said a group of 47 individuals participated in a 65-minute Zoom call Jan. 14 to ask Colorado High School Activities Association to reconsider the mask mandate for players during basketball games.

The group making the request included superintendents from smaller districts around the state, mostly from the northeast region.

In questions submitted in advance, they asked why basketball players are required to wear masks during games, while ice hockey, spirit, wrestling and swimming participants are not. They also asked why the mask-wearing mandate is different for high school basketball than college and NBA.
