Northeast Bowlers shine at regional in Greeley

The Northeast Bowlers competed in the Unified Champion Schools Special Olympics Northeast Regional Bowling Competition at Highland Park Lanes in Greeley on Saturday, Oct. 16.

The Northeast Bowlers, comprised of athletes and partners through Northeast Board of Cooperative Educational Services UCS Special Olympics bowling program, were part of the 9 a.m. wave, which consisted of 90 bowlers in singles, doubles or team competitions.

Opening ceremony was held at the center lane with Maggie Sawyer, Unified bowling athlete from Lone Star, co-officiating. After that, all Northeast Bowlers competed in unique doubles divisions. They all ended with top honors of either first or second place, and each earned a spot to compete at the UCS Special Olympics State Fall Classic bowling tournament Nov. 20 in Englewood.

The 2021 fall bowling season has been a coordinated effort and expansion of UCS Special Olympics activities for Northeast BOCES’ 12 member districts and their students (ninth grade through age 21, if still in school) after a one-year COVID-19 hiatus. UCS Special Olympics allows youth with intellectual disabilities (“athletes”) to partner with peers without disabilities (“partners”) through year-round sports and social inclusion of all individuals.
