Olympics start Friday

The Summer Olympics are set for July 23-Aug. 8 in Tokyo — Japan’s fourth time hosting the Games. The International Olympic Committee is still referring to it as Tokyo 2020, despite a yearlong postponement because of COVID-19.

Four new sports are included in the 339 medal events: surfing, skateboarding, karate and sport climbing. Baseball and softball are returning for the first time since 2008, and there are several new events in traditional sports, like 3-on-3 basketball and Madison cycling.

Most events will not have spectators — a recent decision due to a spike in coronavirus cases.
